Objectives:
- Students should have an understanding of excel
graphing.
- Students should have an understanding of the
menstrual cycle and how the birth control works.
- Students should have an
understanding of the history, events and people in the development of the
birth control pill.
- Students will review for Exam 3

Class Lab Activity
1. (5 pts) Excel Graphing – Your Instructor will let you know which hormone data to graph. Title 1 pt, Correct Y axis and legend 3 pts, Correct X axis and legend 3 pts. See Data on Page 2 of handout.
2. (4 pts) Your Lab Instructor will assign one of the following topics. Links to the topics are available under “Lab Assignments”. You can also use your Textbook and other Internet Sources.
- What were the Comstock Laws? Explain to the class.
- What were the contributions and involvement of the following people:
- Margaret Sanger
- Katharine Dexter McCormick
- Gregory Pincus
- Dr. John Rock
- When did the FDA approve the pill what was involved in its approval?
- Explain Informed Consent related to the birth control pill. Was it used in earlier research studies?
- What were the choices of birth control methods before the pill?
- What was involved in the development of synthetic hormones?
- How does the pill work and what are the side effects?
- What was the effect of the pill on the Sexual Revolution? On Women’s Liberation Movement?
- What was the pill like when it was first released and what is the pill like now in 2008?
3. (6 pts) Formulate 6 essay questions for Exam 3 Chapters 15-21 and email questions and answers to your Lab Instructor.
