Objectives
The objective of this course is to increase your general and specific
knowledge of the discipline of biology. The information that you gain in this
course will be valuable for you to better your everyday life and to conserve
the environment.
Textbook
Fundamental Concepts in Biology
– Fall 2008, H. Tak Cheung, Stipes Publishing 2008. The textbook is being updated every semester
to reflect the changing nature of the course.
Only the current edition is acceptable for the course.

Clicker
Requirement: In this course, you will use a remote
response device, commonly known as the clicker, to improve your learning
experience in the lecture hall and the laboratory classroom. Through the clicker you can participate in
discussion and providing feedbacks to your instructors. You need to have your clicker with you both
in lectures and labs from now on.
Purchase: The clickers are available at the
bookstores. You can sell it back to the
bookstores, if you do not have a need in future courses.
Testing: You can test your clickers at TechZone in the

Grading:
Laboratory Assignments 60 points (4 Lab reports @ 20 points,
dropping lowest score)
Lab reports will not be returned.
In Class Activities 60 points (5 In Class Activities @
15 points, dropping lowest score) Lab Activities will have a PPT presentation
and discussion component. All students will need to be involved in the presentation
and discussion for points to be awarded.
Lecture Exams 200 points (3 Exams @ 100
points, dropping the lowest score) Exam format can be multiple choice and short
answer.
Exams will not be returned.
Lecture points 20
points (5 Lecture Quizzes @ 5 points, dropping lowest)
Lecture Opscans must be filled out
prior to lecture. Include Name, Student ID number and Lab Section Number.
Opscans will be handed out in lab, fill out 5 opscans for the semester. Points
will not be given if any of the above information is missing.
Final Exam 100
points (mandatory, will not be dropped)
Grading Scale
The student is guaranteed and A, B, C, or D if he/she receives 90%,
80%, 70%, or 60% of the 440 total points.
A 396 and above
B 352 and above
C 308 and above
D 264 and above
F 261 and
below
Additional information
1. Please

2.
All
assignments are due upon your entering of the lab, arriving late will result in
5 points being deducted.
3.
You
cannot attend other lab sections. You need to attend lab for the entire period
in order to receive credit. No make-up
labs are given. A missed lab will count as the lab that you will drop.
4.
If you
are ill, your lab report is due immediately on your return to your Lab. This way you will not miss the opportunity to
turn in your lab report that is due.
5. For
an extended medical illness call Disability Concerns (438-5853). Or Student
Affairs (438-5451) in regards to an extended non illness leave, you need to
call the office prior to leaving campus.
6. If
you received medical care due to an emergency room visit, oral surgery, etc.,
make a copy of your doctor’s note and leave in the Biology Office (JH 210) for
Anne Finn Bettendorf. Make sure to
include your name, phone number, lab section number, and days that were missed.
7. All Laboratory reports need to be typed. WebCT
will be used in Biology 101.
8. Any
student needing to arrange a reasonable accommodation for a Documented

1. If using the machines in the 101 lab please
follow the directions that are posted in the room for logging onto the
computer.

1. You have access to WebCT through your iportal and https://webct.ilstu.edu/
2. The first lab session will provide instruction for WebCT.
Students are expected to be honest in all academic work, consistent with the academic integrity policy as outlined in the Code of Student Conduct. All work is to be appropriately cited when it is borrowed, directly or indirectly, from another source. Unauthorized and unacknowledged collaboration on speech topics and/or the presentation of someone else’s work warrants plagiarism.
Students found to inadvertently commit acts of dishonesty will receive appropriate penalties specific to the assignment in question. Students found to commit intentional acts of dishonesty will receive a failing grade in the course and will be referred for appropriate disciplinary action through Community Rights and Responsibilities.
Students will review the Academic Dishonesty and Disruption Policies set forth in the ISU Code of Student Conduct. Students will also review a handout detailing plagiarism is. After reviewing the literature, students will sign this document agreeing to comply with the policies.
Cover sheets will be used during the Biology 101 exams. You are required to keep your exam covered at all times. If you fail to keep your exam covered, it will be considered a cheated exam and you will receive a zero. If you are caught looking at another students exam, bring in a cheat sheet or attempt to use a computer or notes during an exam it will be considered a cheated exam. You will be forwarded to Community Rights and Responsibilities.
